The Covid Puppy Trend
This past year was quite a doozy of a year for many people. Schools closed, businesses shut down, learning and working remotely—all of these changes seemed to happen at once and in the blink of an eye! Suddenly, we found ourselves home…. essentially all day long. We had to make up new routines and find a way to cope with the uncertainty of life.
Cue the Covid Puppy! No, these are not puppies infected with COVID-19 (thank God). These are the puppies that everyone was ‘thinking about getting’ and now, with copious amounts of time on their hands, decided to get—practically all at once it seemed! Suddenly a trend was born…the COVID Puppy Trend. Puppies popping up in homes, left and right, as a direct result of individuals who were stuck at home and needing a positive distraction. And what’s more positive than starting a life long adventure with a puppy?
While there are many pros and cons I could elaborate on in regards to this trend, I will only say this: your puppy does not know that it was brought home during a pandemic. They do not know any life, but the life they are living now. If you want to make sure that this trend is remembered fondly in later years, please do right by your puppy. When life returns to normal for you, make sure it also feels normal for your puppy. Build a relationship with your puppy that is not solely based on love and cuddles. Make sure they know how to exist confidently on their own and have built the trusting relationship with you in order to be able to accomplish this task. Unbeknownst to them, you brought your puppy home to help put a smile on your face and fill a void in your life. They unintentionally, yet happily fulfilled that task. Now make sure you do right by them.
